A question about monks...

Silent Monks

The monks in medieval times had to take a vow of silence – they could only communicate with each other using notes passed by hand.

False

Very few monastic orders require complete silence, as this makes it almost impossible for a complex organisation to get things done, and monasteries were complex institutions. However, some monastic orders such as the Benedictines had rules of silence at certain locations or times during the day, to focus the brothers’ minds on higher things.
