Wandering musicians called Troubadors went from castle to castle singing songs. If the lord refused to pay them, they would make up scandalous songs about him and sing them over and over again.

Troubadors were musicians, but they did not travel all the time – they would look for a lord who was a good patron, and might stay with the household for years. They certainly wouldn’t attempt to extort money by singing...the Lord had all the power, and plenty of dungeons.
